Plantar fasciitis is an inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thin layer of tough tissue supporting the arch of the foot. repeated microscopic tears of the plantar fascia cause discomfort, pain and scar tissue. Prolonged standing may cause heel pain as well and worsen at the end of the day. Possible contributory factors and causes: • Over pronation • Repetitive or heavy landing on the toes • Inappropriate footwear to support high impact exercise • Exacerbation of tight plantar flexors which exert opposing tension Symptoms experienced are: • Any initial discomfort or aching on weight bearing which lessens over time • Any tenderness at calcaneal attachment • Any increasing pain on active or passive dorsiflexion As treatment I will cover the muscles in the foot, calf and thos crossing the ankle joint with focus on the tissue techniques to address tight musculature of the foot. The whole procedure will include: • PRICE • Mobilise plantar fascia to assist relief of tension • Lengthen short muscles, e.g. ankle plantar flexors • Strengthen inhibited muscles, e.g. toe flexors, which assist plantar fascia function • Ensure in the area is sufficient ROM, strength and proprioception to carry out activities of daily living (ADL) without compensatory movement patterns • Identify any secondary conditions • Provide corrective exercise
